When a patient is suffering from organ failure, sometimes the only option to cure them is to receive an organ transplant. In an organ transplant procedure, a donor organ is received from another person and placed in the body of the patient who needs it. Kidney transplants, for example, are the most common type of organ transplant globally every year. Although there are treatments for renal diseases, the most cost-effective way to not only cure kidney disease, but improve quality of life for patients, is organ transplantation.
Other transplants include procedures such as a bone marrow transplant, which replaces unhealthy bone marrow with healthy bone marrow. Diseases like aplastic anemia, certain genetic diseases, and blood cancers like leukemia are often treated with this procedure. There are two types of transplants: autologous and allogeneic. An autologous transplant uses the patient’s own blood-forming cells, while an allogeneic transplant uses donor blood-forming cells–usually from a family member, but these cells can also come from an unrelated donor or an umbilical cord blood unit.
Ultrasounds and Other Medical Testing
An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to capture live images from inside the body. This diagnostic testing is often used on pregnant women to check the health of an unborn child, but it can also be used to determine if there are problems internally with organs such as the gallbladder, liver, kidneys, ovaries, spleen, and others. Common types of medical testing include X-rays, MRIs, endoscopy, biopsy, and analysis of bodily fluids, such as blood or urine.

Success Story: Hamlet Kiiza
Hamlet Kiiza is an eleven-year-old girl who lives in Uganda. She was born with congenital heart disease and lived with it her whole life because no one could find a local doctor who would be able to treat her heart. Congenital heart disease means that Hamlet’s heart had a structural problem, which made it hard for her to perform daily activities. After a long time of searching, Hamlet was able to get in touch with the A&K Global Health office in Nairobi, Kenya.
Joyce, the care consultant in Nairobi, connected Hamlet with Dr. Dipesh Trivedi, a pediatric cardiac surgeon at Narayana Hospital in Bangalore, India. Joyce and her team were able to take care of all the travel details and arrange a treatment plan for Hamlet in a matter of days.
Hamlet traveled to India where she was greeted by A&K Global Health operations officers in Bangalore. After appropriate preparations and tests at the hospital, Hamlet had a successful heart surgery.
Hamlet is now back at home in Uganda and doing well. Hamlet thanked A&K Global Health and the team for receiving her well in India, managing her healthcare, and making her feel at home when she was traveling to a place she had never been before.
